Entwerfen erforschen: Der "performative turn" im Architekturstudium
Editors: Angelika Schnell, Eva Sommeregger, Waltraud Indrist
Birkäuser Verlag, Basel, 2016 | ISBN: 978-3035611038

Architectonic design is at once an aesthetic and social practice, and reflects the social, economic, and technological changes of its era. The book presents the results of the Vienna Institute for Art and Architecture research project Design Paradigm. Using "designing research," it analyzes the elements of the design process and relates them to architectural discourse.

Research Observe Make (ROM)

Author: Michelle Howard
Birkäuser Verlag, Basel, 2015 | ISBN: 978-3035604177

In 2008, the Department of Art and Architecture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Artsdeveloped a new basis for the architecture curriculum. They created five research platforms: Analogue and Digital Production (ADP), Ecology Sustainability Conservation (ESC), History Theory Criticism (HTC), Geography Landscape Cities (GLC) and Construction Material Technology (CMT). The CMT platform is leadby Michelle Howard;who used the platform to explore the Research Observe Make (ROM) teaching studies. The ROM publication documents this program of studies and also forms the basis for future development. It comprises, assembled in one volume, five complementary books, which can also be read individually. After an introduction and an exposé on theory, the "elemental", "spatial" and "material" projects are introduced. The last book documents workshops, lectures and experiments. An inspiring compendium with numerous expert contributions and creative student projects.

Danube Island Interventions
Editors: Condak, C. and Herold, D.
Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Vienna, 2012

This is the second catalogue in a series which records the work of a first semester design studio. This year our studio focused on the topic of landscape, site and the value of un-programmed space. Within the larger context of the Architecture Institute’s theme on re-evaluating large complexes of the 1970’s, we choose the Danube Island as our case study. Although the island was engineered entirely for flood protection, it miraculously became an open public space for Vienna emerging out of the same technological confidences in large scale interventions, visions of growth and social equality of the time. For our studio, it was a territory to explore as we find it today and to find ways to describe it. Out of the specificities of the site the students suggested small interventions to mark a place and give orientation on the island. Some students created only guides for the island. Instead of concentrating on design matters, we concentrated on finding what is there. We document these projects for the institute, to reflect on our work and teaching.

DerDieDas Bildende

Editors: Klösel L.
Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, 2014
